John Noble is not simply playing a scientist on a sci-fi tv-series. Even before he started to play two characters at the same time, he already deserved proper recognition for his work. Season 1!Walter kept hiding the most well kept secret of the then current storyline (Peter’s origins) as well as being a man that had just left a mental institution, now facing reality again - with all of the unstability, insecurity and need of adaptation that that brings. The reveal in 1.20 shocks everyone, in addition to Noble’s exquisite performance. On the flashback episode in season 2 “Peter”, Noble plays a younger Walter - the love for his family and his grief led him to unnimaginable actions - once again, John Noble hits it out of the park, continuing the season playing a vulnerable, unstable Walter, who sees his son turning his back on him, yet again. During 2.22 “Over There Part 1”, Walternate is introduced and Noble plays a totally. different. person. Not only his facial expressions, but also his tone of voice and his mannerisms are extremely distinct. This is not simply an actor playing two characters (sure that was done over and over again), it’s the brilliance of playing two characters. It’s the talent it takes to drawn you into to two different people (just like Anna Torv, who also gives an extremely underrated perfomance - only shows how brilliant this cast is).
In one scene John is playing a funny, extremely inteligent fragile Walter with god knows how many yet unreavelead secrets, being simply adorable with Astrid, Peter and Olivia, while investigating some Fringe event. On the next we have a complete opposite man that knows no boundaries, a man who’s not only more powerful than our Walter but also more aggressive in his decisions.
Plus, Noble has also played a young Walter at the same time he was playing a young Walternate (“Subject 13”). This time, Walter is the one who’s making experiments while Walternate was dealing with the kidnapping of his son: it’s a whole new world of emotions that Noble portrays with absolutely no flaws.
I think it’s time to give some recognition to an experienced actor who delivers every week an amazing portrayal of one of the most interesting and brilliant tv characters of the last decade.
If all of this is not Emmy nomination worthy, then I don’t know what is.
